LIPOCAL: a vegetarian Source of Calcium as bioavailable as Dairy Calcium
Scientific evidences indicate that dietary calcium is essential to maintain body health and to prevent major chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, arterial hypertension, obesity and colon cancer.
Dietary calcium comes mainly from milk and dairy products which cover 70% of a person needs in a Western diet. However there are significant groups of people who do not eat dairy products (lactose intolerance, vegan diet, milk protein allergy, mad cow disease, taste preferences, etc.) and who do not cover their recommended calcium intake.
LIPOCAL Properties
- microencapsulated source of calcium
- contains 36% of calcium
- suitable for vegetarians
- 15% more bioavailable than dairy calcium
- 41% more bioavailable than tricalcium phosphate (TCP)
- contains a balanced ratio Ca/P for optimal bone retention of calcium
- neutral taste
- improved dispersibility.
Application
LIPOCAL allows calcium enrichment in a wide range of foods including soy products, beverages, bakery, etc.
Efficacy Tests
Lipocal, TCP, dairy calcium and water (as a control) were administered to 4 groups of 5 guinea pigs. 3,43 mg of elemental calcium per kg were administered to the animals, which represent the amount of calcium that a person of 70 kg would receive after eating two yogurts of 100 g containing 120 mg of elemental calcium.
Calcium blood concentration was measured every 10 minutes during 50 minutes, defining the absorption profile for every source of calcium tested.
The calculation of the area under the curve (AUC) at 40 minutes for each source of calcium tested showed that LIPOCAL is 15% more bioavailable than dairy calcium and 41% more bioavailable than TCP (see values below).

LIPOFERÒ: Tasteless and non Prooxidative Source of Iron
Iron deficiency is the most prevalent micronutrient deficiency in the world and cause of anaemia. In Western countries there is a higher risk of iron deficiency for young children (6 months to 4 years), teenagers and women during pregnancy and menstruation period. Babies born with iron deficiency suffer a minor intellectual and psychomotor development with irreversible consequences. During infancy iron-deficiency anaemia can permanently affect brain development and in early childhood iron deficiency interferes with growth, weight gain and behavioural development.
LIPOFERÒ Properties
- no metallic taste
- improved absorption profile
- does not trigger oxidation of unsaturated fats or vitamins
- does not irritate digestive tract when administered alone
- is a registrated brand.
Applications
LIPOFERÒ DISPERSIBLE (80 mg/g of elemental iron): Powdered beverages, infant powdered milk, biscuits, bread, food supplements, hard candies, etc.
LIPOFERÒ LIQUID (12 mg/ ml of elemental iron): pasteurised and UHT milk, steamed milk, yogurt (added before fermentation), fruit juices, etc.
Efficacy Tests
Plasma Iron concentration 2 hours after Lipofer administration.
In a trial where iron absorption from Lipofer was compared to ferrous fumarate against a control, it was shown that iron concentration in blood is always higher with Lipofer with ferrous fumarate. Two hours after the administration of iron (10 mg/kg of animal weight) iron concentration in blood was 3,7 times higher with Lipofer than with ferrous fumarate (see below).
In another study with rats Lipofer was shown to be 3,5 times more bioavailable than ferric pyrophosphate and 2,7 times more bioavailable than ferrous sulphate.

LIPOPHYTOLÒ: Water dispersible Plant Sterols to lower Cholesterol
High level in blood cholesterol is the first risk factor for coronary heart disease. Studies have shown that a 10% decrease in blood cholesterol level reduces cardiovascular disease risk between 19% to 54% depending on a person age. And a consumption of 1,5 g to 3 g of plant sterols (or phytosterols) per day lowers LDL Cholesterol by 8% to 15%.
LipophytolÒ Properties
- easy to use as a water dispersable powder
- for fat-free product as it is not esterified with a fatty acid
- no fat oxidation during shell-life
- efficiency on lowering blood cholesterol level and atherosclerosis is demonstrated
- novel food approval from the EU
- registrated brand.
Applications
Lipophytol is a novel delivery system for phytosterols which by increasing their solubility provides a new water dispersible way of introducing phytosterols in food and beverages. The new system lowers cholesterol absorption and allows the use of sterols in 100% fat-free foods and beverages, avoiding the consumption of additional fat. Lipophytol is presented as a powder containing 70% of sterols. It can be used in dairy products, yellow fat spreads, soy drinks, food complements, etc. In each country specific legislative rules may apply for use and claims.
Efficacy Tests
VLDL and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels.
In a trial with groups of 7 mice fed with 2% sterols in form of Lipophytol and 2% sterols in form of esters, bad cholesterol (LDL and VLDL) decreased dramatically in both groups compared with the control group.
Atherosclerotic lesions area.
After 8 weeks of being fed with a high cholesterol containing diet mice were sacrificed and atherosclerotic areas of the aorta artery quantified. The atherosclerotic area in animals fed with Lipophytol was 54% lower (statistically lower at p < 0.05) than the control group area.
